About the place

In the 1980s work began here on a reservoir, as part of the Dâmbovița river scheme; the old Văcărești Monastery was demolished at the same time. The work stopped after 1989, and the basin, ringed by a concrete dike, was filled with water only once. In the years that followed nature took it over: ponds, reeds, willows and water birds.

Văcărești Nature Park was declared a protected area by government decision 349 of 11 May 2016. It covers 183 hectares and is managed by the National Agency for Protected Natural Areas. From the top of the dike you see the whole basin, with the city's apartment blocks all around.

Good to know

  • Wear closed shoes: the paths on the basin floor are earth and can be muddy after rain.
  • The nearest metro stations are Piața Sudului, next to Sun Plaza, and Mihai Bravu, on the side towards the Dâmbovița.
  • The Tudor Arghezi Memorial House is about 1.2 km away, on Piscului Hill.
