About the place

In 1705 Constantin Brâncoveanu pulled down the old church in the middle of the market and built the present one, the largest church in the Brâncovenesc style. Pârvu Mutu painted it, and it was consecrated on 29 June 1707. After the prince's martyrdom in 1714, his remains were brought here by his wife Marica and buried without a name on the slab; his name appears only on the silver lamp above the grave, in a 1720 inscription that Nicolae Iorga found in 1914.

The 1802 earthquake brought down the domes, and the 1847 fire destroyed the inn around the church. The restoration begun in 1968 rebuilt the domes and the porch columns. The church keeps part of the hand of Saint Nicholas, in a reliquary given in 1599 by Michael the Brave. In August 2026 the canonisation of Princess Maria Brâncoveanu was proclaimed here. In the small park next to the church stands the Kilometre Zero marker, from which road distances in Romania are measured.
